Two city mysteries written in 1850s New Orleans make explicit references to lesbian witch cult forming within the city, holding “mysterious gatherings”. One author even called New Orleans one of the centers of lesbian life in the United States, tracing the cult back hundreds of years. 

While the claims initially appear outlandish, further research revealed that accounts of lesbian secret societies and witch cults can be traced from ancient Rome to the witch trials to the French Revolution. Often ignored, these stories together constitute a long running legend and a consistent feature of Western discourse.
